Freeing the Authentic Self: Phases of Recovery and Growth from an Abusive Cult Experience?
Gillie Jenkinson was awarded her PhD in 2016 for doctoral research.
29 former cult members were interviewed and asked "what helps ex-cult members recover from an abusive cult experience?". Her thesis/dissertation represents their voices.
This research shows that psycho-education is a vital part of the therapy, including: how cults gain control; understanding thought reform; identifying the cult pseudo-identity; and de-briefing trauma. This psycho-education takes place within a therapeutic relationship and is, therefore, a relational psycho-educational approach. Read her formal Abstract and overview here. Gillie regularly presents her research and is a contributor to a number of publications. Check events page to see Gillie’s upcoming training programmes and presentations.
